• Army Pvt. John W. Ross has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Pam Thomas of Albany and Roger Ross of Newport and is a 2005 graduate of West Albany High School.
• Army Sgt. Heidi L. Rickey has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Rickey graduated in 2000 from Newport High School and received a bachelors degree in 2007 from Portland State University.
• Army National Guard Pvt. Kayla M. Eriksen has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of Robbie Frear and David Eriksen both of Albany. Eriksen is a 2007 graduate of South Albany High School.
Two WWU freshmen win scholarships
Western Washington University, Bellingham, Wash. — Western Washington University students Andrew Conniff and Chelsea Thaw each received a President’s Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year.
Conniff, an incoming freshman and son of Robert and Linda Conniff of Corvallis, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship. He earned a 3.88 GPA at Santiam Christian High School. He hopes to major in international business.
Thaw, an incoming freshman and daughter of John and Daryl Thaw of Corvallis, received a $3,000 President’s Scholarship. She earned a 3.84 GPA at Crescent Valley High School. She is interested in majoring in environmental studies or environmental sciences.
College honor roll
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y. — Corvallis residents Ethan P. O’Brien, a sophomore studying mathematics; Nicolas A. Sayavedra, a senior studying computer and systems engineering/computer science; and Sophia L. Stehr, a senior studying civil engineering; have been named to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Dean’s List for the spring 2008 semester. To make the list, students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average and no grades below a “C.”
California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, Calif. — Katherine Bode of Corvallis, a freshman at California Lutheran University, has been named to the spring 2008 Dean’s List. Students qualify for the list by maintaining a 3.5 grade point average or higher in their academic subjects.
