For the first time this summer the Academy for Lifelong Learning is offering a special schedule of classes, at the request of members. ALL is a program of the OSU Alumni Association and is open to any mature adult. Six sessions will be offered on Wednesdays from
10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon in July and August as follows:
July 9 - Geocaching
A 21st Century Treasure Hunt (First Congregational Church)
Kris Eagan, geocacher, will facilitate participants’ learning how to use a GPS receiver to find a hidden cache. A limited number of GPS receivers will be available, or participants can bring their own. The receiver must be able to show latitude and longitude, so not all car navigation models will work.
July 16 - Dreaming Outdoors:
The Challenges of Mounting Shakespeare in the Open Air (OSU Quad)
Scott Palmer, artistic director of Bag and Baggage productions and director of OSU’s 2008 Production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will address the challenges of mounting and producing outdoor theatre and the implications of working outdoors for actors and theatre technicians. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be performed in the Quad as the outdoor Summer Shakespeare performance at OSU.
July 23 - All That Glitters is Not Gold:
How to Watch the Beijing Olympics (First Congregational Church)
Taras Liskevych, OSU Women’s volleyball coach and former US Olympic women’s folleyball head coach (1988, 1992 and 1996) will help participants be better observers of this summer’s Olympics. The class will look at the Olympics from the perspective of the athletes, coaches, administrators, media and fans.
July 30 - Oh Rapture!
1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Gilbert and Sullivan at OSU (OSU Theatre Lobby - Withycombe Hall) Charlotte Headrick, OSU Professor of Theatre Arts and play director, will talk about this summer’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado,” which will be the 99th anniversary of Gilbert and Sullivan at OSU.
August 6 - Cemeteries
(Crystal Lake Cemetery)
Judy Juntunen, local historian, will lead a tour though Crystal Lake Cemetery, one of the oldest in Benton County. The tour will cover why the cemetery was established in this location, information the people buried there, and the Civil War veterans’ project.
August 13 - Tour of OSU
(OSU - Benton Hall)
Larry Landis, OSU Archivist, will lead a tour of the OSU Campus to talk about several of OSU’s historic buildings of the core campus area and the architects that designed them. The tour begins on the east side of Benton Hall and concludes in the library quad on the north side of Kidder Hall. Wear walking shoes.
