CRIME WATCH (Aug. 14)

This log includes incidents in which there may have been a public disturbance or a risk to the public. Information comes from the Corvallis Police Department and the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. It does not include all calls for service. The status of incidents may change after further investigation. Locations are approximate. People arrested or suspected in crimes are considered innocent until proven otherwise.

Monday, Aug. 11

Theft: 11:08 a.m., 1000 block Northwest Monroe Avenue, Corvallis. A visitor at a fraternity house reported that her laptop computer and iPod were stolen from one of the rooms, where she had stayed the night. Police questioned residents, who did not know of any suspects. The laptop is described as a Dell with a Hawaiian Islands decal on the cover. The iPod is a pink “Nano.”

Criminal mischief: 11:09 a.m., 600 block Northwest Seventh Street, Corvallis. A caller reported finding obscene and gang-related graffiti on playground equipment at Washington Park. An officer found black permanent marker writing referring to one gang making threats against another, in addition to obscenities. The officer took photos for police records and advised the Corvallis Parks and Recreation Department to remove the writing.

Dog chasing sheep: 6:30 p.m., 600 block Heritage Hills Road, Philomath. A resident reported that she had caught and detained a dog that had been chasing her sheep. The caller said this was the second time that a neighbor’s dog had gotten loose and threatened her animals. A deputy cited the owner of a yellow Lab named “Neil” for violating the ordinance of “chasing, injuring, killing of livestock or commercially bred fowl.”

Tuesday, Aug. 12

Suspicious activity: 2:06 a.m., 1400 block Northwest Forestgreen Avenue, Corvallis. A resident reported a suspicious noise coming from his neighbor’s vacant home. The man said he heard the sound of metal being wrenched or pried. An officer checked the residence and found a bent window screen frame but no other obvious damage. The officer left his card with the neighbor to give to the residents of the house when they returned.

Dog complaint: 10:54 a.m., 31900 block Fern Road, Philomath. A caller reported that a neighbor’s aggressive pit bull was fighting with their dog through their fence. A deputy spoke with the pit bull’s owner, who confirmed that the two dogs had a quick confrontation. Neither dog was injured or loose and the deputy found no reason to cite either dog owner.
