Eugene Symphony Chorus — Auditions for the chorus will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 16, at the Hult Center in Eugene. Participants are required to sing a short song or aria and also could be asked to sight read. Those chosen for a position in the chorus will perform “Fauré’s Requiem” on Oct. 12 with the Eugene Symphony. Auditions are by appointment only. ZAPP Dancers — Auditions for the 2008-2009 ZAPP dancers will be from 6 to 7 a.m. Aug. 27 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at the studios of On Your Toes School of Dance, 645 River Road, Eugene. Fall Fling gardening festival registration — The 2008 Fall Fling will be from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 13, at Dallas High School, 1250 S.E. Holman Ave., Dallas. Rosalind Creasy, author of a book on edible landscaping, will be the keynote speaker. The event is sponsored by the Polk County Master Gardeners. Legacy Ballet — Legacy Ballet is now accepting registrations for the Fall 2008-Spring 2009 school year. Legacy Ballet offers ballet classes for ages three through adult. Jazz classes are offered for ages seven years and older, and hip hop for ages 11 years and older. The fall open house will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 26 at the studio, 104 Main St., Albany. Central Coast Chorale — The first rehearsal for the 2008-2009 season of Central Coast Chorale will be from 9:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 23, at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W. Olive St., Newport. Singers must be at least 14 years old. Regular rehearsals are every other Saturday from 9:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Chorale members pay a participation fee and help with fundraising. Eugene Symphony — The Eugene Symphony will present three free concerts at the Hult Center featuring the finalists for its music director search. The concerts will be Sept. 5 (Nir Kabaretti); Sept 12 (Danail Rachev); and Sept. 25 (Tito Muñoz). Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis to the general public starting Aug. 21. Sick Town Derby Dames — The Sick Town Derby Dames are a newly forming women’s flat-track roller derby league. Wah Chang Northwest Art & Air Festival — The ninth annual Wah Chang Northwest Art & Air Festival runs Aug. 22-24, at Albany Municipal Airport. Visiting pilots can participate in flour bombing and spot landing contests between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. each day. Reliant Aviation will offer Discovery flights over Albany from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12. The flights last about 20 minutes. Pilots from throughout western Oregon will host Young Eagles flights for children ages 8 to 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days. The free sessions include 20 minutes of classroom instruction on the basics of flight, followed by a 20-minute ride in a plane over the mid-valley area. Each young flyer will also receive a photograph of the event. Corvallis Aero Service will give plane or helicopter rides to adults and children from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Cost is $20 each. Members of the International Plastic Modelers Society will have models for kids to put together in one of the airport hangars. In addition, 37 pilots will bring their hot-air balloons to Timber-Linn Memorial Park for early morning flights at 6:15 a.m. each morning, weather permitting. Balloon rides are available by reservation for $200 per person. Rides are arranged by weight and availability of the balloons. Rides usually last about one hour, depending on weather, wind, and available landing sites. To make a reservation, contact the Albany Visitors Association at 928-0911.
