Simon places third at Iron Composer 2008

Greg Simon, son of Steve Simon and Angie Stambuk-Simon, was a participant in Iron Composer 2008 at the University of Nebraska, Omaha, sponsored by ARTSaha! He was one of five participants selected from more than 50 composers across the nation to participate in this competition. He placed third overall. Each participant was given five hours to compose a musical work for piano trio based on Claude Monet’s painting, “Impression, Sunrise.” Greg is a graduate teaching fellow in music composition at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is a 2003 graduate of Crescent Valley High School.

OSU student receives golf scholars stipend

Joshua Lewis, student at Oregon State University and resident of Corvallis, was awarded a $2,500 stipend by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) as part of the GCSAA Scholars Program administered by GCSAA’s philanthropic organization, The Environmental Institute for Golf.

The GCSAA Scholars Program, funded by the Robert Trent Jones Endowment, was developed to recognize outstanding students planning careers in golf course management. Winners were selected to receive scholarship awards based on the final ranking in a competition judged by GCSAA’s Scholarship Committee. Factors considered were academic achievement, potential to become a leading professional, employment history, extracurricular activities, recommendations from a superintendent with whom the student has worked and a current academic advisor.

Go honored as Bates College scholar

Hiromi Go of Corvallis was recently named a Dana Scholar at Bates College. Each year, 20 sophomores are chosen as Dana Scholars and receive scholarship aid. Students are chosen based on their grade point average, extracurricular activities and submitted essays.

Go, a dean’s list student, is a the son of Nensei Go and Yoshie Fujita of Japan. He is a 2007 graduate of Northfield Mount Herman School, and he is the nephew of Jim and Hua-yu Li McLendon of Corvallis.
