If Corvallis dentist Dr. Kurt S. Black gives her money for her Halloween candy, 9-year-old Dru Eschleman said she will donate it to cancer research.

She just lost a close friend to cancer.

Madison Lorenzen, 10, said she will buy a new “American Girl” book.

Xia Sireix-Rayton, 8, said she believes in thrift. She will save her money, possibly for a family road trip. “Then I would buy lots and lots of candy.”

Sorry, Doc. You can’t win them all.

Yet Black keeps trying to get the chocolate monkey off children’s backs. He gives them money in exchange for Halloween candy in the hope they will use the cash to buy something that won’t rot their teeth. His personal crusade, now in its seventh year, continues from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, the day after Halloween.

Kids can bring their candy to his office at Timberhill Dental, 2356 N.W. Professional Drive.

Candy is going for $2 per pound this year. That’s a 100 percent increase from the single buck Black paid out in previous years.

But wait. There’s more.

Kids will also receive a free toothbrush and can enter into several raffles. In addition, Black will be donating to three charities. He will give a matching donation based on the amount of candy received. Children can choose between the Jackson Street Youth Shelter, Heartland Humane Society and Linn-Benton Food Share.

“Last year we collected more than 344 pounds of candy,” said Sandie Bohanan of Timberhill Dental. “This year we hope to collect even more.”

James Chacon, 10, said he already has his eye on a “huuuge candy bar.”
