JUNCTION CITY — Four players scored in double figures as Philomath High won its season-opener on Tuesday, holding off Junction City 58-46 in a nonleague boys basketball game.

Dan Haynes had 14 points and Luke Whiteman added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Warriors, who led 44-22 entering the fourth quarter.

“We really learned we need to be in better shape,” PHS coach Blake Ecker said. “The first half we played well defensively. -. It turned sort of ratty in the fourth quarter, which is why we gave up so many points.”

The Warriors had 19 turnovers in the game, most of those coming in the second half.

Trevor Motter added 10 points and four assists for PHS.

Philomath will host Pleasant Hill on Thursday.

PORTLAND — Santiam Christian started fast and improved in the second half to defeat Portland Christian.

Derek Howerton scored 20 points and had six rebounds to lead the Eagles (2-0). Corey DeKruyf had eight points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles played good interior defense and got Portland Christian’s big men in foul trouble early. The strong defense continued in the second half, but on the outside shooters.

PHILOMATH — Junction City broke away from a close game with a 19-3 run in the third quarter, handing Philomath a 47-30 nonleague loss.

The Warriors (0-2) led 18-17 at the half.

“We came out and kind of froze, got a little frantic,” PHS coach Amy Leonard said. “We couldn’t score anything and JC came out and outplayed us in the third. -. If you take that quarter out of the game, it was pretty darn close.”

Cassandra Noble and Laura Schaudt combined for 15 points to lead PHS, which got quality minutes from three junior varsity swing players: Rylee Marshall, Jenna DeLos Reyes and Sierra Grunwald.

BLUE RIVER — Violet Cathcart led Alsea with 11 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Wolverines fell to McKenzie in their season and Mountain West League opener.

The team struggled early, but rallied in the fourth quarter to score 15 points.

“We’re pretty young,” coach Lynn Cowdrey said. “We have three seniors. A lot of kids played with no varsity experience. It’s a get tough quick deal. There were nerves when we started out, and then they settled in. And it was on the road with a quality opponent.”
