Riley, Rodgers receive top honors

Oregon State football coach Mike Riley and freshman running back Jacquizz Rodgers received several honors Monday.

Riley was named the American Football Coaches Association Region 5 Coach of the Year, as well as Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year.

Rodgers was named the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. His awards were determined by the conference coaches.

“I’m really excited for him and the program,” Riley said. “It’s a good sign. I’d have to say he made an impact.”

Riley, 55, led the No. 24-ranked Beavers to their third consecutive bowl appearance. They face No. 18 Pittsburgh in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31.

OSU has an 8-4 record and finished tied for second in the Pac-10, one win away from the Rose Bowl and a conference co-championship.

“I sincerely say this, that it’s truly a staff award,” Riley said. “I have a good group of people. It’s recognition for work done by a lot of people.”

After losing the first two games of the season, Riley kept the Beavers working toward improvement each week. Along the way they upset No. 1 Southern California and won six straight games.

Riley is joined on the AFCA Football Bowl Subdivision Regional Coach of the Year honors list with Ball State’s Brady Hoke, who was an assistant coach at OSU under Jerry Pettibone from 1991-94. The other three recipients are Houston Nutt of Mississippi, Mike Leach of Texas Tech and Brian Kelly of Cincinnati.

“This is a testament to the entire program and all the hard work, sacrifice and unselfishness that embody the student-athletes, coaches and support staff all under the leadership and vision of coach Riley,” athletic director Bob De Carolis said. “We are extremely proud of him and his accomplishments and we congratulate him on this honor.”

Rodgers became the first freshman to be named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year. He carried the ball 259 times for a conference freshman record 1,253 yards and 11 touchdowns. He had 29 receptions for 247 yards and a touchdown.

He did that in 11 games. Rodgers missed the Nov. 29 Oregon contest with a second-degree sprain of the AC joint in his left shoulder suffered Nov. 22 at Arizona, and is still questionable for the bowl game.

“Unless he’s feeling really good, I still have concerns with him playing in this game,” Riley said. “I just don’t want to put him in any risk of redoing it. It was pretty significant. We’ll see.”

Rodgers is the first OSU player to be named the offensive player of the year since the award began in 1975. He’s the second player of the year from OSU after defensive end Bill Swancutt won the defensive player of the year award in 2004.

OSU offensive tackle Andy Levitre, wide receiver Sammie Stroughter, defensive end Victor Butler, kickoff returner James Rodgers and Jacquizz Rodgers were first-team All-Pac-10 selections.

Jacquizz Rodgers was a unanimous first-team selection.

“That is amazing,” Riley said. “That’s pretty hard to do.”

Offensive guard Adam Speer, linebacker Keaton Kristick, safety Greg Laybourn, cornerback Brandon Hughes and Stroughter as a punt returner were second-team picks.

Safety Al Afalava, cornerback Keenan Lewis, quarterback Lyle Moevao, receiver Shane Morales, defensive end Slade Norris and defensive tackle Stephen Paea were honorable mention picks.

“I really appreciate our representation,” Riley said. “I think that’s very good representation. We could have other guys included, but you don’t get everybody. All these guys on this team shows we have good players. It’s not overachieving at all. These guys played, produced and they are recognized as very good players. That’s well-deserved by all of them.”

Southern California linebacker Rey Maualuga was named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year.
