Oregon State Police troopers busted 52 people for drunken driving over the New Year’s holiday.
Last year, troopers arrested 81 people for DUII throughout the state during the entire holiday weekend.
Updated holiday-related statistics on fatalities, accidents, DUII arrests and other incidents are expected by Monday afternoon.
State and local law enforcement officials continue to ask people to beware of an increased number of intoxicated and unsafe drivers through the extended New Year’s holiday weekend, which continues until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4.
During last year’s 78-hour New Year’s holiday period, four people died in four separate traffic crashes on Oregon roads. The average for the last 10 years over this holiday period is five fatal accidents each year. However, troopers did not investigate any fatal traffic crashes over this New Year’s Eve.
A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study released last year showed the daily death toll from impaired driving crashes during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday periods is significantly more than for the rest of the year.
The report showed from 2001 to 2005, an average of 36 fatalities occurred per day on America’s roadways as a result of crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver. That number increased to 45 per day during the Christmas period and to 54 per day over the New Year’s holiday.
