My final blog, time to say goodbye

2013-06-25T16:30:00Z 2013-07-05T14:41:18Z My final blog, time to say goodbyeBy CLIFF KIRKPATRICK, Corvallis Gazette-Times Corvallis Gazette Times

My time covering the Oregon State Beavers athletic scene officially comes to an end today. I’m going on a grand road trip across the country to cover the Alabama Crimson Tide for the Decatur Daily and Florence Times Daily.

I’m excited for the new adventure, while sad to leave Corvallis behind. I’ve met some great people and covered many great events. You can review my top OSU memories on the blog so I could keep the last goodbye short.

My time here will give me perspective covering the huge production that is the Crimson Tide, just like coming from a major sports city to a college town made me look at life and sports differently nine years ago.

I’ve appreciated the people who work at OSU — coaches, administrators and support people. They do care about the players. The athletes have been entertaining on the field and off. It’s always great to see them excel as pros and people after they leave campus.

I’ve thanked some coaches I dealt with on a regular basis in person such as Mike Riley, Pat Casey and Tanya Chaplin, but that thank you should go out to all of them for all sports. At some point I wrote about every team. The fans are lucky to have them guiding the teams they follow.

With the boom of social media, I’ve connected with sports fans better than back in the old days of the 1990s and early 2000s. It was fun talking, arguing and answering questions on the blog, Twitter and Facebook. Beaver Nation is great group to write for.

I mentioned my fondness of the fans at the end of my OSU baseball book because of all the help I received with personal stories and contributed photos on the history of the baseball team.

My family moved to the Willamette Valley from San Diego for me so I could gain experience covering Division I athletics. I have to thank them, particularly my wife, Maria, for putting up with me. Now I’m thanking her again to allow us to move.

So with that, it’s time for farewell. I’ll always remember my time on the beat fondly. Writing a book, covering the College World Series and covering various bowl games were some of my dreams come true.

Thank you for your GREAT reports, Cliff. I hope that your successor can be at least half as good as you were.

Enjoy your new job covering a perennial championship contender. Sounds like FUN!

Cliff sorry you chose to move to one of the worst places in USA for family and overall comfort. Moving from San Diego to Corvallis is bad enough, but to Alabama, get serious.

See you back here in a year or so.
