Reports from Senior Bowl practice this week has former Oregon State receiver Markus Wheaton turning some heads.

One NFL.com analyst called him the most impressive receiver at the Senior Bowl – by far. He showed excellent speed, quickness and burst. Wheaton has routinely separated from defenders out of breaks. He showed strong hands and is an outstanding pass catcher in traffic.

Wheaton’s work in Mobile, Ala., created a buzz among the NFL scouts. NFLDraftcoutdown.com ranks Wheaton the No. 16 receiver in this year’s crop headed into the Senior Bowl. His ranking may change after Saturday’s game.

His 4.45-second speed in the 40 is impressive. Wheaton also has experience as a kickoff and punt returner.

“I’m not going up against him a whole lot, but I get him every now then,” OSU cornerback Jordan Poyer said . “We have gone against each other for four years, so we are trying to stay away from each other. But from what I’ve seen he’s doing all right.”

Here's a podcast with Wheaton. And here's my story on Poyer in Friday's GT.
