Kaiyo Sushi, which opened up about three months ago in Albany, is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, with more than 50 different types of dishes circling around the business.

“The key for us is the food is fresh. Everything has to be fresh. The fish we use is the best quality,” said owner Terry Yang.

Unlike traditional sushi restaurants, in a conveyor belt operation, customers can see what they like and pick up a dish — including sashimi, sushi rolls, fry rolls, edamame and more — as it passes by their tables. Options cost anywhere from $1.75 to $4.25 and the plates are color-coded by price.

“They’re small portions, an affordable price, so you can try something different, something new,” Yang said.

And he added that about half of his customers have never had sushi before. But even towns like Albany are becoming more diverse and residents young and old want to sample new cuisines.

The restaurant also is convenient for working professionals who want a fast but healthy lunch option. A waiter doesn’t have to take a food order at Kaiyo Sushi. “You just sit down and grab whatever you need,” Yang said.

Marcus DeLong, originally from Sweet Home, works at nearby Power Honda, and he was having lunch at Kaiyo Sushi on a recent weekday. He said he’s already been to the restaurant several times since it opened.

“It’s quick. The food’s ready. I think it’s great. It would be nice if there was more around like it,” DeLong added.

Though Kaiyo Sushi specializes in sushi, the restaurant also has several cooked food options, including teriyaki chicken and ramen. And there’s also sake, local beer on tap, Asian soft drinks and more to pair with the dishes.

Happy hour is from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to close each day, and customers get 25 percent off their sushi bill.

Kaiyo Sushi also offers a private party room that seats up to 20 people for special events.

Yang also owns Queen’s Chopstick in Corvallis. His business partner and one of the chefs, Kun Jiang, owns two Sushi Village locations in Portland.

Kaiyo Sushi, 2826 Santiam Highway SE, is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.
