American National Insurance Co. has named Ivan Vandehei of Sweet Home Agent of the Year for 2003. This is the third straight year that Vandehei has earned the award.

For the fourth consecutive year, Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital has been recognized for an exceptional commitment to employee safety and health. The hospital received a SHARP Award from the state Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program. SLCH continues to be the only hospital facility in the state to be so honored.

SHARP is a program of the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division. It recognizes employers who work with employees to implement exemplary safety and health programs.

The hospital's accomplishments over the past year include:

• Development of a systemwide emergency management plan.

• Development of a logistics task force to address critical supply and transportation needs during disasters.

• Initiatian of mercury reduction efforts.

• Initiation of a regulated medical waste project.

• Installation of a negative-airflow system in the endoscopy room for infection control.

Training & development

Garth and Twyla Delamarter of Crossroads Camera in Corvallis attended the PMA convention in Las Vegas March 1-5. This annual convention and trade show introduces the latest innovations in the photo industry. The couple also participated in a wrap-up meeting presented by Independent Photo Imagers, America's largest group of independent photo labs, to which Crossroads Camera belongs.

Comings and Goings

A new body care shop has opened in downtown Albany.

Aromatique sells aromatherapy supplies, candles, herbs and teas, soaps and soap-making supplies and other personal-care products. The store, owned by Jeri Caudle, also offers classes in making soaps, lotions and other products, as well as basic aromatherapy techniques. Licensed massage therapist Debbie Dempsey offers massage at the store by appointment.

Aromatique is at 222 First Ave. W. in the Flinn Block. The phone number is 928-9475. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

Memory Lane has opened in Albany's Heritage Mall. The store is next door to Target at one of the mall's entrances. The business is owned by Kirk and Jeni Bachelder, who have operated seasonal stores at the mall in years past.

Memory Lane sells collectibles, including 1950s and '60s-style gifts, Betty Boop and Elvis items, lamps, telephones, Zippo lighters, die-cast metal cars and life-size people posters. Customers can also make their own personalized stuffed animals.

News & Notes

A study commissioned by Tec Labs has shown the Albany company's LiceFreee! Lice Control Spray to be highly effective. Researchers for Insect Control and Research Inc., an independent Baltimore research group, found that non-toxic LiceFreee! killed 100 percent of the adult human body lice within 24 hours and prevented any nits (or eggs) from hatching.

The study, submitted to Tec Labs on Jan. 21, concluded that LiceFreee! gives complete mortality to lice and inhibits further egg development at an early stage. At 24 hours, 100 percent of the treated lice were dead and none of the treated eggs hatched.

Evergreen Technologies Inc. has expanded its line of portable external HotDrive storage products.

The Corvallis company's new TeraByte HotDrive delivers 1,000GB of external data storage in a compact, portable enclosure. The 250GB HotDrive provides an initial 250GB and can be upgraded to terabyte capacity. The TeraByte HotDrive can be connected to any PC with an available PCI slot and Windows 9x/ME/NT4.0/2000/XP Red Hat, Turbo, SuSE, Caldera Linux or FreeBSD operating system.

Nominations are being solicited by the Oregon Department of Agriculture for a number of open positions on 22 of the state's 28 agricultural commodity commissions. Appointed commissioners administer producer assessments spent on promotion, education and research. Each appointment is for a three-year term beginning July 1 except the Oregon Potato Commission, which is a four-year term, and the Oregon Wheat Commission, which is a five-year term. Nominations must be received by 3 p.m. May 23.

To qualify for an appointment, interested individuals must be citizens of the United States, residents of Oregon, actively engaged in producing or handling the commodity for at least five years and derive a substantial portion of income from the sale of the commodity.

U Lane O Credit Union has changed its name to Oregon Community Credit Union, a change that reflects the expansion of its membership service areas to nine additional counties in western Oregon.

Since 1956, Eugene-based U Lane O has served employees of the state of Oregon and the University of Oregon, current members of the UO Alumni Association, the AARP and the Lane County Bar. Under its new charter, Oregon Community Credit Union can offer its services to anyone who lives or works in Benton, Linn, Marion, Polk, Clackamas, Yamhill, Multnomah, Washington or Columbia County.

Coastal Farm & Home officials have announced plans to open a new store in Gresham sometime in April. The Albany-based farm, home and ranch store chain will occupy the former Supply One building located at 2865 N.E. Hogan Drive.

Coastal Farm & Home operates five additional stores, with locations in Albany, Woodburn, Eugene, Roseburg and Yakima, Wash.

Crossroads Camera of Corvallis has been approved as a certified digital photo processor by Independent Photo Imagers, America's largest group of independent photo labs.

This certification tells consumers that Crossroads can print "real pictures" from digital media, such as SmartMedia, CompactFlash, SD Card, Memory Stick, CDs and floppy disks printed at a photo lab, just as they did their traditional film in the past.
