OSU is hosting it’s 12th Annual Empty Bowls Benefit! The Empty Bowls tradition started 28 years ago with a Michigan high school teacher and his students as they searched for ways to raise money for a local food drive. Now, Empty Bowls, as it has come to be known, is a nation fundraising platform to address food insecurity within the community on a local, national and/or international level.
The concept is simple: attendees buy tickets for the event (sliding scale starting at $5). The first 150 attendees are guaranteed a ceramic bowl made by local artists and students partaking in a meal of soup and bread. Other fun events happen during the benefit: a raffle, a silent auction, and a bingo game, with prizes from local businesses who generously donated to help raise money for the beneficiaries.
This year, the beneficiaries of the funds raised are the Emergency Food Panty on the OSU Campus and the World of Good Inc. The Emergency Food Panty is a crucial resource to help students who are experiencing or at risk for food insecurity. The student population is hugely underrepresented when it comes to hunger issues. The Emergency Food Pantry is one of the first programs like it in the country. Way to go OSU! The World of Good inc. is a non-profit organization based out of Junction City, OR with a mission to “improve the health, education and quality of life of impoverished individuals around the world” coordinating sponsorship with life-improvement projects in Ethiopia.
Empty bowls would like to extend a huge thank you to its community partners that have graciously donated many wonderful products for attendees to bid on and/or win! These partners include: The Majestic Theater, Gathering Together Farm, Nearly Normal's, OSU Athletics, Taco Vino, Dark Side Cinema, OSU Craft Center, Block 15, OSU Creamery and many more! These businesses are helping take steps to address the food insecurity that affects so many. This important event could not happen without their help!
The event is happening on Saturday, March 10th, from 5-7pm, taking place at the McNary Dining Center located on the OSU Campus. There is ample parking across from Tebeau Residence Hall in the B1 lots.
