CORVALLIS — Oregon Dance and guest artists present the 32nd Anniversary Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, at the Majestic Theatre, 115 S.W. Second St., Corvallis.
Carol Soleau, an associate professor of dance at Oregon State University, is the founder and artistic director of Oregon Dance. The concert’s modern dance repertoire includes “The ’60s Revisited,” a tongue-in-cheek depiction of the uptight mind-set of the late ’50s clashing with the later decades’ free-spirited movement.
Also featured is “Othello’s Curse,” an eight-minute interpretation of Shakespeare’s epic play, featuring four male and female dancers and set to the music of cellist Zoe Keating. “Life after Jack,” created by Soleau in 1992, is reset on Julie Auxier. It offers a feminist alternative ending to Mother Goose’s famous “Jack and Jill” poem. The jazz class contributions are “Black and Blue,” a melding of hip-hop and classical jazz styles, and “Knock me a Kiss,” which features OSU freshman dancer Jackson Dougan as the soloist.
Guest artists include Rainbow Dance Theater, who will premiere excerpts from their work set to the music of J.S. Bach. Also, Mark Baker will present two performance ballroom dances.
Reserved seating may be purchased in advance at OSU’s Women’s Building, online at www.majestic.org or by calling 541-738-9469. Tickets ($6-$12) are also available at the door an hour before the performances.
