A cloud of smoke drifts into the trees on June 30 as Austin Looney, left, 23, of Jefferson, and Jonah Gladney, 37, of Stayton, hand crew supervisor, watch for spots of fire that could potentially cross the dozer line during the Interagency Wildland Firefighting School in Sweet Home. The school prepares its participants to fight wildfires.
BEHIND THE PICTURE: We worked with fire agencies to tell the story of how they were preparing for the wildland fire season. While some members of each crew fought the fire itself and put out hotspots, I learned that other members remained across the dozer line to watch for potential spread. The smoke rising from the fires and the sun beaming through the trees created a nice background for firefighters standing in a field of flowers.
