Zonta Club inducts members

At its September luncheon meeting, the Zonta Club of Corvallis inducted four new members: Lynda McHenry, owner of Willamette Tours and Cruises; Misty Sorte, executive director of CASA Voices for Children; Eunice Kim, general manager of Best Western Grand Manor Inn and Suites; and Carole Hobrock, director of sales for the Corvallis Country Club.

Corvallis women get PEO scholarships

Three Corvallis women recently received scholarships from the Oregon State Chapter of PEO. Awards were made to Erin Bell, a senior majoring in exercise and sports science at Oregon State University; Laurel Staton-Smith, a junior in the Oregon Health & Science University nursing program; and Elizabeth Iosua, a junior majoring in pharmacy and general science at OSU. The PEO Sisterhood is a philanthropic educational organization dedicated to providing opportunities for women. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, character, seriousness of purpose and financial need.

Local woman wins Miss NPRA pageant

Nicole Schrock, daughter of Jim and Kristi Schrock of Corvallis, won the title of 2010 Miss NPRA at the Northwest Professional Rodeo Association Pageant held during the NPRA Finals in conjunction with the Oregon State Fair in Salem. She was one of seven young women competing for the award. In addition to winning the title, Schrock won the categories of Appearance, Speech, Personality and Horsemanship. Schrock attended Corvallis High School, where she was captain of the basketball, equestrian and drill teams. She was involved in 4-H, showing rabbits and horses and volunteering as a junior/teen leader and county ambassador. She remains involved in the local 4-H program, and coaches the West Albany High School Equestrian Team. She attends Linn-Benton Community College, where she has completed an associate of applied science degree in animal technology: horse management. She is dual-enrolling with Oregon State University this fall to pursue a degree in genetics. Schrock has loved rodeo her whole life, and was first introduced to the arena as a member of the Benton County 4-H Horse Court. She went on to be 2007 Benton County Fair and Rodeo Queen and 2009 Sweet Home Rodeo Queen. Amanda Paul, also of Corvallis, received the Miss NPRA Congeniality and Spirit awards.

Go named to dean's list at Bates College

Hiromi Go was named to the dean's list at Bates College in Lewiston, Me., as a result of his scholastic standing during the 2008-2009 academic year. Go is the son of Nensei Go and Yoshie Fujita of Matsudo, Japan, and the nephew of Jim and Hua-yu Li McLendon of Corvallis. He is an economics/mathematics major with a minor in Chinese, a 2006 graduate of Riverdale High School in Portland, and a 2007 graduate of Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts. He is founder and president of the Bates College Taiko Drum Club. This fall, he is studying Chinese in Beijing, China. He will study at Oxford University in England this spring.

Philomath teen wins fiction prize

Quinn Charles Amacher of Philomath won first prize in the fiction, age 15 to 18 category of the Nature of Words Rising Star Creative Writing Competition. Amacher's entry is called "Pigman." He and the other winners will be honored at an awards ceremony, reading and reception Nov. 4 at Central Oregon Community College in Bend.

Local musician wins contest

Tatiana Hargreaves took first place in the youth division (age 15 and younger) and the open division (any age can enter) of the 20th Appalachian String Band Music Festival, held in August in Clifftop, W.V. More than 100 contestants entered these two fiddle contests, and more than 4,300 people from the United States, Canada, Finland, England, Denmark, Sweden, Australia, France, Ireland and Japan attended. Tatiana, 14, is attending Crescent Valley High School as a freshman this year.
