A 39-year-old Albany man is charged with arson for allegedly starting a fire at a home last year, according to documents filed in Benton County Circuit Court.
Russell Lee Dorgan pleaded not guilty Thursday to first-degree arson and first-degree criminal mischief, both felonies. First-degree arson is a Measure 11 crime carrying a minimum sentence of seven and a half years in prison upon conviction.
Dorgan, who is out of custody, appeared in court with his attorney, Thomas Hill. Hill requested Dorgan undergo an evaluation at the state psychiatric hospital.
Authorities accuse Dorgan of starting a fire Dec. 12 at a home located on the 700 block of Northwest Teak Loop, according to an indictment in the case. The fire caused more than $50,000 in damages, the indictment alleges.
The second charge stems from damage Dorgan allegedly caused to the property beyond the fire, with the damages exceeding $1,000, according to the indictment.
Prosecutors originally charged Dorgan in May but amended the indictment to include the alleged amount of damages in October.
Dorgan is set to next appear in court on Dec. 28 for a status hearing.
