This weekend, 1,200 Special Olympics Oregon athletes will converge on Corvallis for the 34th annual Special Olympics Oregon Summer Games, presented by Les Schwab Tire Centers. Athletes have been training for a minimum of eight weeks, and must have participated in one of many regional competitions to be eligible to compete this weekend.
Globally, Special Olympics is the largest amateur sports organization in the world. Here in Oregon, there are three seasons, winter, summer and fall, with local and regional competitions leading up to each season's State Games event. The thousands of athletes that participate in Special Olympics Oregon often compete in multiple sports throughout the year.
Volunteer positions are still available are scorekeeping for golf at Trysting Tree golf course on Sunday, and general volunteers for the track and field competition at Crescent Valley High School on Saturday.
Interested volunteers can contact Jean Hansen at (800) 452-6079 ext. 16, or email at jhansen@soor.org.
Special Olympics Oregon is a year-round program offering 15 different Olympic style sports to athletes with intellectual disabilities. Over 5,000 athletes participate from nearly every county in Oregon. For more information on Special Olympics Oregon, visit www.soor.org.
