A Woodburn man died and an 18-year-old Albany woman was injured Friday in a collision on Interstate 5 25 miles north of Salem.
Oregon State Police troopers said the man, Fredi Cruz-Vasquez, 24, had been driving a 1994 Nissan Sentra north on the freeway near milepost 277. At about 9 p.m., for an unknown reason, he stopped in the inside lane and got out.
A 1999 Ford Mustang driven by Lynzie Olson, 18, crashed into the rear of the stopped Sentra. Both vehicles came to rest blocking most of the northbound freeway lanes. Cruz-Vasquez's body was found on the ground away from his car.
Olson was using safety restraints and received minor injuries, troopers reported. She was transported to Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin, where she was treated and released.
Police said the Nissan did not have any lights on while it was stopped in the inside northbound lane. Cruz-Vasquez was apparently standing outside his car next to the driver's door at the time of the crash.
Troopers from Salem and Tualatin offices, with the assistance of an OSP crash reconstructionist, are continuing the investigation. Alcohol is being investigated as a possible contributing factor on the victim's part.
All lanes were reopened by 12:30 a.m.
