County announces public-health award

Benton County Health Department recently initiated the Sheldon Wagner Award for Outstanding Service in Public Health. This award was presented to Dr. Wagner by Commissioner Linda Modrell. The 2008 recipient of that award was Beth Barker, CPA, who serves both on the Public Health Planning and Advisory Committee (PHPAC) and on the Benton Community Health Center's Board of Directors.

Dr. Wagner has been a member of the Public Health Planning and Advisory Committee for the past six years. He served as chair of that committee in 2006. Dr. Wagner began practicing internal medicine in Corvallis in 1963. He was made professor of Medical Toxicology at Oregon State University in 1972. He authored one of the first textbooks on pesticidal poisoning and has published numerous articles in that field.

Dr. Wagner retired in 2003 and has remained active in volunteer work and consulting.

The following students from Corvallis were recently listed on the 2008 spring semester dean's list at the University of Portland.

Students need at least a 3.5 grade point average to be eligible for the dean's list.

Bolte makes the dean's list at OIT

Zachary Bolte of Philomath was named to the 2008 Winter Term Deans' list at Oregon Institute of Technology. Inclusion on the list requires a 3.30 to 3.69 grade point average. Bolte is studying to be an EMT - Paramedic.

Three named to President's List

Haley Carlson, Anthony Foster, Sheri Phillips all of Corvallis have been named to the 2008 Winter Term President's list at Oregon Institute of Technology. Inclusion on the list requires a 3.70 grade point average and above. Carlson is studying Diagnostic Medical Sonography; Foster is studying EMT n Paramedic; and Phillips is pursuing a degree in Clinical Laboratory Science.

New University of Portland graduates

Portland, University of Portland - The following Corvallis residents recently graduated from the University of Portland: Talal Alsaeed, master's, engineering; William Crew, bachelor's, sociology; Kelli Cronkrite, bachelor's, elementary education; Taylor Johnson, bachelor's, finance; Jennifer Maitland, bachelor's, nursing; Alice-Louise Rossignol, bachelor's, English; James Schlegel, bachelor's, accounting; Laura Sullivan, bachelor's, biology.

Ithaca, N.Y., Cornell University - Joan Alison Casey of Corvallis recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biological engineering from Cornell University.

Reinhard recognized for academic work

Travis Reinhard of Corvallis recently earned First Honors for outstanding academic achievement at the University of San Diego's Honors Convocation. Travis will be attending the summer session at the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente (ITESCO) in Guadalajara, Mexico. He is a 2007 graduate of Crescent Valley High School.

Woods receives award for service

Margret Woods, Charter Member of The Arc of Benton County, was honored by The Arc as it celebrated its 50th Anniversary of Incorporation on May 18. Margaret has remained involved with the work of The Arc to enhance the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families the entire history of The Arc of Benton County.

At the Arc of Benton County 2008 Awards Ceremony Diana Hendrickson won the Distinguished Service Award for years of outstanding service to individuals with developmental disabilities as a professional, parent, and volunteer. Barbara Sackett won the Honor Roll in gratitude for her unstinting service. Susan Melero won the First Citizen Award for an individual with developmental disabilities who has shown exceptional personal growth and contribution to the community. Candice O'Bannan won the Martha Mumford Volunteer Award for unpaid service. Candice has participated in the DD community during her years as a student at Corvallis High School. Grace Lawson, R.N. won the Direct Service Provider Award for a person whose full time employment is devoted to direct care of an individual with developmental disabilities.

Brink-Roby co-chair of advisory team

Jonathon Brink-Roby, a junior at Corvallis High School, has been elected co-chair of the Oregon Department of Education Youth Advisory Team. The Team develops policy recommendations that are presented to and considered by Oregon Superintendent of Education Susan Castillo before being forwarded to legislators, state board members, and other education policy makers.

Histand on college study-service team

GOSHEN, Ind., - Mark Histand, son of Phillip and Elizabeth Histand of Corvallis, is participating in the College Study-Service Term (SST) in PerĂº during this summer, along with 23 other students. Goshen established an SST unit there in 2005.

Histand is majoring in environmental science at Goshen College. He is a 2004 graduate of Western Mennonite School and attends Corvallis Mennonite Fellowship.

CASA welcomes new volunteers

CASA - Voices for Children recently gained three new CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocate) to the group of dedicated community volunteers. Irene Dumas, Pat McNeely and Lauri Richer completed the 30 hours of required training, agreed to make a two year commitment to the program and were sworn in as CASAs by Judge Williams on May 20th.

When a child is removed from their home a CASA is appointed to the case by the judge and remains on that case - and in the child's life - to successful end. The CASA investigates, facilitates, and monitors the case while getting to know the child and makes recommendations to the judge based on the child's best interest.

CHS band students to join day camp

Three Corvallis High school band students have been selected to join Music in May at Pacific University in Forest Grove. Students were chosen for the leadership, musicianship and love of music for the three day camp. The CHS students are Gary Breed, senior flute; Becca Loewen, junior horn; and Masaki Tanaka, sophomore, trumpet.
