For the eighth year, the Oregon State University Beavers and University of Oregon Ducks are out for blood, but it's not on the gridiron. "The Rivals for Life" competiton sees which school's students, alumni and fans can donate the most blood through Nov. 21. The event started Thursday.
The top team will be announced at the Civil War football game in Eugene on Dec. 3, and the winning alumni association will receive a Civil War trophy.
Each donor who fills out an honor roll ballot is entered to win two tickets to the Civil War football game in Eugene on Dec. 4. In addition, every presenting donor will receive a deck of Civil War playing cards (See CivilWarBloodDrive.com for more information).
The Pacific Northwest region must collect more than 5,000 units of blood and more than 700 units of platelets every week to supply the needs of hospital patients. Those who wish to donate can call 541-484-9111 to schedule a blood donation at their nearest blood drive. For a listing of statewide American Red Cross blood drive locations, see www.nwblood.redcross.org.
Last year, fans, students and alumni of both schools collectively donated over 7,500 units of blood and platelets to help patients.
