Oregon State University's Mom's Weekend starts today, and includes a full slate of events such as pottery workshops, tours of campus facilities and fashion shows.

"We have three fashion shows during the day on Saturday," said Linda Howard, an OSU student leadership and involvement worker. "We have local and regional retailers that submit for that, but also our student designers. That's the highlight."

About 3,000 to 4,000 mothers and other family members will visit OSU for the big weekend, Howard said.

Mom's Weekend originated in 1923 as Women's Day, and mothers came to campus to support women students. It grew and transformed into Mothers' Weekend. In the 1930s, sons began inviting their moms to visit campus, as well.

Saturday

9:30 to 11 a.m. - Tour of Corvallis trees. Meet on the MU north steps.

10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Moms weekend "Tea for Two," buffet-style English tea, MU Lounge, Limited tickets available by calling 737-6872 or at MU Room 103

10 a.m. to 12 p.m. - University Honors College and Student Alumni Association brunch and talent show, CH2M Hill Alumni Center ballroom.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Pet Day 2008, sponsored by the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Magruder Hall.
