Bicycle birding outings begin

The Audubon Society of Corvallis has launched its 2007 Bicycle Birding schedule.

In addition to saving fossil fuel, bicycle birding offers other advantages. On a bike, a birder can access bird habitats and encounter birds that motorists miss. Bicycle birding also covers more ground, and more bird habitats, than hiking.

The first outing will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area, 29555 Camp Adair Road, Monmouth. Meet at the pheasant cage parking lot on the north side of Camp Adair Road. This is the best site in western Oregon to see and hear Yellow-breasted Chats. Sightings of many other bird species are possible along with colorful snakes, wildflowers and mammals. The trip will be an easy, flat ride of 10 miles or less.

Future trips will occur from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, June 24, July 22, Aug. 26 and Sept. 23, all starting from Avery Park Rose Garden. Bring water, binoculars and bicycle helmet. The trips are free and will cover from 3 to 10 miles in easy, flat rides.
