Donations in Brooke Wilberger's name can be made to the Brooke Wilberger Scholarship Fund through the Oregon Community Foundation. The fund was set up by friends and family in 2006. Grants go to Oregon high school students who share Wilberger's ideals and spirit of community service.
"Brooke was involved in so many things that helped our community that a scholarship in her name that rewards community service couldn't be more fitting," said Meg Gray, one of Wilberger's best friends while growing up in Veneta. Gray helped to set up the scholarship fund.
The idea for the fund came from Jessica Marks, another of Wilberger's friends who attended Elmira High School.
In a letter she mailed to hundreds of possible donors in 2006, Marks said her friend's abduction left an emptiness in the lives of many people.
"Brooke blessed the world with selfless acts of kindness," Marks said.
She was involved in many community service and volunteer activities, such as working at soup kitchens, coaching youth soccer and raising money for the Children's Miracle Network.
"Brooke shared her time and energy unquestioningly," Marks said. "Each day that passes without her is a little darker, lacking the care Brooke so readily gave. The life stolen from my friend will never be returned but we can carry her spirit through us."
