Johnson named to Alpha Chi

Hannah Johnson of Corvallis was among 54 new members inducted March 22 in Harding University's chapter of Alpha Chi, the national intercollegiate honor society. Johnson is a senior nursing major. Harding's chapter, the Arkansas Eta chapter, is open to the upper 10 percent of the senior class with a minimum 3.75 grade point on 104 semester hours, and to the upper 10 percent of the junior class with a minimum 3.85 grade point on 80 semester hours.

Local students named Pop Warner scholars

Thirty-six student-athletes from MidValley Pop Warner, formerly Linn Benton Pop Warner, have been named national first and second team All-American Scholars. These student-athletes were recently honored as the Pacific Northwest region's scholars and have now progressed to the national level.

Recipients of the award have been invited to the 49th Annual All-American Scholar Awards Banquet.

The weekend will consist of events to honor these athletes where guests such as NFL Pro-Bowler Bob Sanders and Olympic Gold Medal swimmer Summer Sanders in attendance.

First team recipients were Alex Gaekwad, Corvallis, and Nathan Smith, Corvallis.

Military honors

Air Force Airman Jacob C. Teeter graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

He is the son of Debbie Teeter of Bend and the nephew of Cindy Urbach of Toledo.

Teeter graduated in 2007 from Mountain View High School in Bend.

Navy Seaman Recruit Cody J. Osborne, son of Susan A. Osborne of Corvallis, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

OSU forensics team wins prizes

The Oregon State University forensics team just returned from a strong showing at the Pi Kappa Delta National Honorary Tournament at Louisiana State University, Shreveport. The four-day tournament, held every two years, features students from more than 50 universities.

Among other awards, Forest Ledbetter, a speech communication major from Sheridan, and David Kubota, an English major from Forest Grove, were semi-

finalists in junior and senior debate. Andrew Leder of Albany and Daniel Meiwes of Corvallis also logged impressive showings, taking home excellent and superior rankings in impromptu speaking. The OSU team also included Morgan Mansker of Sisters and graduate assistant coach Dan Torres of Reno, Nev.

Zion student places third at geography bee

Karl Schmidt, an eighth- grader at Zion Lutheran School, took third place in the annual State Geography Bee on Friday, April 3. This year the competition was at Chemeketa College in Salem. Karl took third place out of 100 students competing for the chance to be the one Oregon qualifier to the National Geography Bee held next month in Washington D.C. Karl won a $50 prize and was given a World Atlas.

Tomorrow's Leaders award winners

OSU Federal, Your Community Credit Union, awarded 15 high school seniors the 11th annual $1,000 Tomorrow's Leaders Today college scholarships at its annual meeting .

Founded in 1998, the TLT scholarship program seeks to honor overall excellence within OSU Federal's teen members. This year's winners include (with college/university of choice in parenthesis) Tracy Berg of Corvallis High School (George Fox University), Derek Burbank of Dallas High School (Oregon State University), Erin Cunningham of Corvallis High School (Southern Oregon University), Elliott Finn of Crescent Valley High School (Oregon State University), Evan Gutt of Corvallis High School (Lane Community College), Erik Hellesto of Santiam Christian High School (Oregon State University), Kelly Hogan of Newport High School (Chemeketa Community College), Heather Koenig of Crescent Valley High School (Oregon State University), Mark McGuire of Philomath High School (Oregon State University), Trevor Motter of Philomath High School (Oregon State University), Connie Shen of Crescent Valley High School (Oregon State University), Jacob Sinclair of Philomath High School (Oregon State University), McKenna Sitton of West Albany High School (Oregon State University), Elizabeth Turner of Crescent Valley High School (Linfield College), and Patrick Wolfert of McNary High School (Oregon State University).

Morneault receives Marshall Award

Matthew Morneault, an Army ROTC cadet from Oregon State University, has received a George C. Marshall Award as one of the top cadets in the country and will travel to Lexington, Va., to take part in a national security seminar with military leaders.

Morneault, a senior from Sweet Home and a graduate of Sweet Home High School, earned the honor as the top Army ROTC cadet at OSU, according to Lt. Col. Michael J. Daniels, a professor of military science at Oregon State.

Morneault is scheduled to be commissioned June 12 this year, when he will become a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Shenk participates in study abroad program

Ashley Shenk of Philomath is among 27 Linfield College students participating this spring in a Linfield study abroad program. Shenk, a junior majoring in intercultural communications, is taking courses at the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca A.C. in Oaxaca, Mexico, where she will have the opportunity to visit Mexico City, Puebla and Chiapas and participate in an internship or community service activity. She will improve her language skills while taking classes in Spanish and living with a Mexican family.

Shenk is the daughter of Sheri Mishler and Douglas Shenk, both of Philomath.
