Children from second grade through high school can learn more about acting and stage productions during three two-week Youth Theatre Camps to be held this summer at Corvallis High School.
"Summer is a time when kids lose their momentum, enthusiasm and training," said Laura Braibish, who teaches drama at the school. "The first part of every school year is spent gearing back up and helping kids remember things they learned last school year. This will give kids a continuum of the work they have been doing. It also will give me an opportunity to teach subjects that I don't teach during the regular school year, such as acrobatics and stage combat."
In addition to her high school students, Braibish will be assisted by local actor and musician Cherie Gellurud.
High school students will create a radio play where they will learn about voice work and sound effects.
"We will also study the art of Lecog, which is French mask-making," Braibish said. "Younger kids will learn about playwriting, improving their song and dance skills and will culminate with a recital for the other kids and their parents."
The following programs will be offered:
• July 29-July 10: CHS Black Box Theatre. Half-day program, 8:30 a.m.-noon for incoming second- through eighth-graders, $125. Full-day program, same dates, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., $225.
• July 13-24: CHS Black Box Theatre. Half-day program, 8:30 a.m.-noon, incoming second- through eighth-graders, $125. Full day, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., $225.
• July 27-Aug. 7: CHS Black Box Theatre. Full-day program, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., incoming ninth- through 12th-grade students, $225.
Cost will include snack and T-shirt. After-camp child care will be available for an additional fee. Multi-child discounts are available.
Children will be divided into age groups, Braibish said. There is no limit on the number of students who can participate, she said.
"We hope to appeal to a broad base of kids, ranging from kids with little or no experience, to accomplished actors who want a challenge," Braibish said.
The young actors will also see rehearsals for the Majestic Theater's production of "Bye, Bye, Birdie," which will be held on the main stage.
