SALEM - An Oregon lawmaker was seriously injured in front of the state Capitol when a 22-year-old driver plowed into her, officials said.

State Rep. Kelley Wirth, a Corvallis Democrat, suffered injuries to her lower body and legs Tuesday evening. The 40-year-old legislator was taken to Oregon Health & Science University hospital in Portland, said Salem Police Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer.

Police have arrested Lisa Temple, 22, of Salem and charged her with attempted murder.

"Our investigation determined this was not an accident," Kohlmeyer said. "It was an intentional assault. It involved a personal issue between the two of them. It does not appear to involve her work as a legislator," he said.

The incident occurred as Wirth, 40, was leaving the Capitol and preparing to step into her car. The Ford Thunderbird driven by Temple barreled down on her, slamming into Wirth and her car.

On Tuesday night, Wirth's injuries were not considered life-threatening, Kohlmeyer said. On Wednesday morning, a member of the hospital staff at OHSU refused to confirm or deny that Wirth was at the hospital.
