CV student wins competition

Evan Wu, a 15-year-old sophomore at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis, is the 28th winner of the Vernon L. Wiscarson Young Musicians' Competition.

The Wiscarson family and the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem sponsors the competition, which is held in Smith Music Hall at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. Additional underwriters include WOU, Salem Electric and Sterling Savings Bank. This year's competition was held Saturday, March 15.

Wu, accompanied on the second piano by his professor, Rachelle McCabe, performed the first movement of Robert Schumann's piano Concerto in A Minor.

Later in the day, Wu wanted everyone to know how much he also owes to his teacher, Joan Gathercoal. Wu also noted that McCabe teaches two of the other competition entrants, pianists Michael Sheng and Ellen Yin. Sheng tied for second place with violinist Patrick Yun. "McCabe's devotion to her students is incredible," Wu said. McCabe is an instructor in the OSU Department of Music.

Wu is the son of Junjie Wu and Susan Wang of Corvallis.

Also receiving awards were; in a tie for second place, Michael Sheng, piano and Patrick Yun, violin and honorable mention, Conner Plant, alto saxophone and Andrew Gerlicher, piano.

Sponsored by the Wiscarson family, the Competition continues a 28-year tradition, a labor of love that began when the Wiscarson Family donated money to recognize the mid-Willamette Valley's finest young musicians. Established in 1980 by the Wiscarson Family, this event provides an opportunity for the mid-Willamette Valley's young soloists to compete for cash prizes. Students in Marion, Polk, Yamhill, Linn and Benton counties, through their senior high school year, are eligible.

The OSAS administers the competition. The Association is responsible for bringing The Oregon Symphony to Willamette University's Smith Auditorium for a series of symphony and pops concerts each year.
