Those who want to send messages to military personnel serving in the Persian Gulf or anywhere else overseas can now use the Internet to show their support.

Because of the anthrax scare, it is no longer possible to send postal mail addressed to "Any Service member" as it was during the first Gulf War in 1990-91.

However, "Stars and Stripes," the military news service, has established a "Messages of Support" feature on its Web site, enabling anyone to send e-mail messages of up to 50 words, 24 hours a day, at no charge. The service, which began Monday, will be posted on the Web site for anyone to read and will be published in the print edition.

Other support options are available on the Web site, such as "Defend America" messages, USO care packages and "Adopt a Platoon." The Web address is www.stripes.com.

In addition, Operation Uplink will provide prepaid phone cards to servicemen and women overseas so that they can remain in contact with friends and family. The cards are paid for through donations, the majority of which are from VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members. To make a donation or to request a phone card, see www.operationuplink.org.
