Gathercoals honored by club
The Corvallis Kiwanis Club recently recognized Marion and Paul Gathercoal as "Everyday Heroes."
The Gathercoals came to Corvallis in 1940 and immediately became involved in community affairs. Paul served on the City Council and Tax Equalization Board and was scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 1. He and his brother, Jim, developed a large tract of land in north Corvallis.
Marion may be best known for her part in making the Corvallis Arts Center a reality. When the Episcopal Church moved to its present location, she spearheaded the effort to acquire the building.
They literally worked from the ground up. The building had no seating arrangements, and she organized a program at which the admission was one chair. Chairs were brought to sit in, then left behind after the program.
