Forty-four music students from Corvallis' two high schools and middle schools were recently selected for a number of all-state and all-Northwest choirs, bands and orchestra sponsored by the Oregon Music Educators Association and the Music Educators National Conference.

OSU professor receives Chiles Award

William Ripple, a professor of forest ecosystems and society at Oregon State University, has been selected to receive the 2008 Earle A. Chiles Award, presented by the High Desert Museum in Bend.

The award recognizes work to heighten public understanding of natural resource issues of the high desert region.

The award includes a certificate and honorarium of $15,000.

Military honors

• Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Jesse S. Newman-Barnhart, a 2007 graduate of Corvallis High School, Corvallis, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.

• Army Pvt. Jason L. Caldwell has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. Caldwell earned distinction as an honor graduate of the course. He is the son of Rick and Sue Caldwell of Albany.

Musicians selected for Honor Band

Eighteen musicians from Crescent Valley High School and 24 musicians from Corvallis High School were selected by audition to participate and perform in an Honor Band in conjunction with the Western International Band Clinic in Seattle recently. Christmas Parade Award recipients

The 24th annual Corvallis Community Christmas Parade award winners were recently named. They include:

• The Santa's Choice Award for Best Use of Theme went to the Girl Scouts of Santiam.

• The Mayor's Choice Award for Best Commercial Entry went to A-1 Charlie's Towing.

• The Judge's Choice Award for Best Use of Lights went to the Benton County Communications Van.

• The Commissioner's Choice Award for the Best County Entry went to the Muddy Creek Maze.

• The Corvallis Lions Club Choice Award for the Best Nonprofit/ Civic entry went to Eye Raisers/ Guide dogs for the blind.

• The Downtown Corvallis Association's Choice Award for Best Use of Music went to the Circle Church of Christ.

• Mrs. Santa's Choice Award for Best Animal Entry went to Lucky Longneck Llama, 4 -H Club.

• Mrs. Santa's Choice Award for Best Walking Entry went to the Corvallis Gazette-Times.

The theme of this year's parade sponsored by the Corvallis Lions Club and the Downtown Corvallis Association was "Celebrate the Beauty of Your Christmas Dreams." This year's grand marshal was Mary Lee Horch, Miss Oregon USA.
