Here's the text of the resolution the Corvallis City Council passed Tuesday opposing a pre-emptive and unilateral war against Iraq by the United States:
Whereas, citizens of Corvallis have petitioned their city council to take a position on a pre-emptive, unilateral attack on Iraq by the United States;
Whereas, a wide range of civic and religious leaders have declared that such an attack would be unjust, unneeded and in contravention of international laws;
Whereas, the Corvallis City Council and its citizens are strongly committed to democratic process and open government with full respect for international law;
Whereas, we believe that a pre-emptive United States military attack would violate international law and our commitments under the United Nations charter and further isolate the United States from the rest of the world;
Whereas, international security depends not only on the judicious use of military power, but on all people of all nations working cooperatively to eliminate the poverty, injustice, inequality and environmental degradation that breed war and terrorism;
Whereas, we believe that the city of Corvallis and its citizens will suffer directly and indirectly from any unilateral act of war by the United States;
Now, therefore, be it resolved that we, the members of the city council of the city of Corvallis, oppose any pre-emptive, unilateral attack by the United States against the nation and people of Iraq;
Be it further resolved that we give our unconditional support to United States military personnel serving at home and abroad, and if military action does become necessary, we pledge our unyielding support to all men and women serving in our nation's military at home and abroad;
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution is forwarded to the Oregon Congressional delegation and the president of the United States.
