At Our Best

Each week ''At Our Best'' highlights the achievements of those in our community. It includes honors, awards and other recognition that is being earned by local residents.

College honor roll

Claremont, Calif. - Scripps College fall semester dean's list: Sophia Marie Herron of Corvallis. She is a junior, majoring in European studies and theater.

Ithaca, N.Y. - Cornell University fall semester dean's list: Katherine "Katy" Volmert of Corvallis, senior neurobiology major (4.0 GPA). She is a Crescent Valley High School graduate.

Rochester, N.Y. - University of Rochester fall dean's list: Laura Teresa Morrison of Corvallis, junior majoring in political science. She is the daughter of Clint Morrison and Nancy Rosenberger, and a graduate of Corvallis High School.

Doyle receives scholarship

Alexa Mary Doyle received the Dance and Drill Coaches Association (DDCA) Academic Scholarship, recently awarded at the OSAA Dance and Drill State Championships. She was also names a DDCA Academic Scholar. She is a senior at Crescent Valley High School.

Debate team on its way to nationals

A team of high school students from the Corvallis Speech and Debate Team traveled to Portland March 8-10 to compete in the Oregon State Speech and Debate Championships. First place honors in public debate were taken by Ben Lykins and Zac Bentley, with Bentley also placing second in radio commentary.

The following weekend the team traveled to Ashland for the Southern District National Championship Qualifier, with outstanding results. Qualifying for the national championships were Alyssa Vincent-Hill in Lincoln-Douglas value debate and Zac Bentley in foreign extemporaneous speaking. Also qualifying for nationals were Emily Plotkin, and the team of Frazier Bleeker and Ben Lykins as second alternates. Vincent-Hill and Bentley will represent Corvallis at the nationals in Wichita, Kan., in June, competing against the best high school debaters in the nation.

As members of the National Forensics League (NFL), Corvallis team members compete in a variety of debate and public speaking events, preparing their presentations based on extensive research, and honing their skills in twice-weekly practice sessions. The team is coached by Danielle Robertson, forensics director for the Corvallis School District.

Military news

Air Force Airman Keith J. Kolkow has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Leanna Cavanaugh of Corvallis. Kolkow is a 2006 graduate of Crescent Valley High School, Corvallis.

Army Pvt. Alicia A. Reed has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of Michelle Reed of Boring, and sister of Angela Reed of Corvallis.

Crescent Valley teams win awards

The Oregon School Activities Association and the Oregon Dairy Farmers sponsor the Academic All-State program each sport season. This winter season, Crescent Valley High School dance team won first place with a 3.66 GPA team average, wrestling won first place with a 3.55 GPA, girls swimming was first place with a 3.78 GPA, and boys basketball was tied for first place with 3.61 GPA for all 5A schools. In addition, coming in seventh were girls basketball with a 3.62 GPA and boys swimming with a 3.41 GPA.
