Fires damage home, RV in Linn

Firefighters in Linn County were busy putting out flames Tuesday as two fires broke out in Scio and Albany.

At 3:06 p.m., Scio firefighters were called to a house fire at 38833 N.E. Ash St. A high school student driving by the residence called 911.

Walter Eaton, who rented the house, lived there with his two teenage children, said Tina Greiner with the Scio Rural Fire District.

The family was not home at the time and is getting help and a place to stay from family and friends.

The house was insured.

The fire, which is believed to have started as an electrical fire in a lamp, destroyed the living room, kitchen and bathroom, Greiner said.

Stayton and Lyons firefighters also responded, and Lebanon firefighters helped cover other Scio calls.

In Albany, a recreational vehicle parked at the Knox Butte RV Park, 125 Expo Parkway N.E., was destroyed, along with everything in it.

Albany firefighters responded at 3:25 p.m. and had the fire under control within about 20 minutes.

There was ammunition inside the RV and bullets went off, hitting other vehicles, but no one was injured, said Albany fire spokeswoman Wanda Omdahl.

The RV owners, Ray and Sharon Lanig of Christmas Valley, travel to gun shows in their RV and were elsewhere when the fire started, Omdahl said.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation this morning. There was about $80,000 in damage, and the RV was insured.

Lassen RV has loaned the Lanigs an RV to stay in.
