4-H team places fourth in national contest

The Benton County 4-H Team of Jordan Baumgartner, David Baglien, John Baglien and Cassandra Noble placed fourth overall out of 33 teams at the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest, which was Nov.18 at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. The team had won the right to represent Oregon by winning the state contest in July. The Oregon team finished 12 points behind team champion Colorado, with Illinois placing second and Maryland third.

The team placed first in sheep and meat goats, second in oral reasons, fifth in swine, and ninth in beef. Jordan Baumgartner of Corvallis finished second in the individual standings and second in beef and reasons, fourth in swine and seventh in sheep. David Baglien of Corvallis and Cassandra Noble of Philomath both placed in the top 10, with Baglien second in sheep and Noble 10th in swine. Ashley Culver went as the team alternate, and the team was coached by Bruce Moos of Blodgett.

4-H banquet honors Benton leaders

Nearly 160 people celebrated accomplishments by Benton County 4-H leaders and members at an awards banquet Nov. 22. In attendance were County Commissioner Linda Modrell, Fair Board Chair Pat Boren, state 4-H program leader Roger Rennekamp and 4-H specialist Marilyn Lesmeister.

Awards were presented in the following categories:

Outstanding Leaders of the Year: Mary Arnold (home economics), Annie Ingersoll (associated projects); Jackie Thorsness (agriculture); and Wendy Williams (Wildlife Stewards).

Leader pins: Christy Warden (35 years); Gina Bressler (25 years); Kathy Goracke and Jan Heron (20 years); Jerry Muravez, Kathleen Muravez and Melissa Theurer (15 years); Diana Barnhart, Tim Barnhart, Bruce DeSautelle, Cindy Duckworth and Terri Walters (10 years); Lisa Balduman, Elizabeth Cowden, Scott Culver, Scott Drahn, Helen Fausett, Terri Gammon, Kathy Hinz, Annie Ingersoll, Romella Lee, Karen O'Donnell, Darrell Oakes, Jeni Richardson, JoLynn Stroda and Kirk Stroda (5 years).

Citizens Bank Outstanding Senior Member Awards: David Baglien and Jonathon Brink-Roby.

Goldner Outstanding Intermediate Awards: Peter Baglien and Kayla Thorsness.

Distinguished Service Award: Bill and Karla Chambers.
