Christopher Haak earns Eagle award
Christopher J. Haak, the son of Paul Haak and Margie Martens of Corvallis, recently received the Eagle Scout Award during ceremonies held at Lewisburg Hall. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 170, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Corvallis Sunrisers. His scoutmaster is Bob Bernhard.
For his Eagle Scout service project, Haak and his crew procured materials and installed fencing at the Locke Cemetery, near Lewisburg Avenue. He earned 25 merit badges in Scouting and served his troop as troop guide, den chief, assistant patrol leader and senior patrol leader. A brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, he was the Talapus Chapter service chief and currently serves Tsiqan as lodge service vice-chief.
A graduate of Cub Scout Pack 324, Haak has participated in numerous Boy Scout events, including summer camp experiences at Camp Pioneer, Camp Cherry Valley and Camp Baldwin. He attended Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, the National Scout Jamboree in Virginia and the National Order of the Arrow Conference in Indiana. He also completed a 50-mile backpacking trek on the Pacific Crest Trail.
He is a senior at Crescent Valley High School, where he serves on the yearbook staff. He plans to attend college next fall.
Grandparent program awards
Awards of appreciation were presented to outgoing members of the Foster Grandparent Program Community Advisory Council recently. The outgoing members are: Karen Emery, Chintimini Senior Center; Susan Tipton, Lebanon Senior Center; Jo O'Leary, Kidco Head Start; Ardith Jesse, foster grandparent; Joe Harding, retired minister; and Cynthia Hylton, R.S.V.P. Each person served four years on the advisory board.
The new advisory council members, to be seated March 14, are: State Rep. Kelly Wirth and her alternate, Kathy Panknin; Helen McGovern, Willamette Manor; Janice Gregg, OSU Extension; Gerry Kosanovic, Corvallis School District; Wendell Seat, Philomath School District; Beth Fox, R.S.V.P.; Wendy Hoffman, Kidco Head Start; and Liz Miller, foster grandparent.
Stephanie House was elected chairwoman. Liz O'Donel, area manager for the SMART program, was elected vice-chairperson.
The Community Advisory Council offers guidance and support to the project director in the areas of program policy and planning, recruitment of senior volunteers, volunteer recognition and program evaluation. For more information call 758-5951.
Benton residents study overseas
MC MINNVILLE - Benjamin Mahon and Sara Williams of Philomath and Donna Banwarth of Corvallis spent January studying in England, China and Spain through a special study program at Linfield College.
Mahon, a junior majoring in finance, is a 2000 graduate of Philomath High School. He is the son of Bob and Ginger Mahon. He took the class "King Arthur in Britain," which examined the folklore origins and literary developments of the Arthurian legend. The class readings introduced historical Dark Age Britain.
Williams, also a 2000 PHS graduate, is majoring in economics and environmental studies. She is the daughter of John Williams and Tammy Tasker. She took the class "China - One Country, Two Systems," which provided an overview of the business environment in the People's Republic of China, including Hong Kong.
Banwarth, a 2000 graduate of Crescent Valley High School, is majoring in economics and Spanish. She is the daughter of Mary Veda of Corvallis. She took the class "The Al-Andalus Legacy: Arab Civilizations in Spain," a study of the Al-Andalus, the Islamic culture left behind in the southern part of Spain during the eight centuries of Moorish occupation.
The students were among 220 students participating in on-site study programs through Linfield College's January Term, a four-week period of concentrated study in one course.
Jan Maitland's art chosen for exhibit
Corvallis pastel artist Jan Maitland's painting "Mexican Corridor" has been juried in the Pastel Society of the West Coast 17th "Pastels USA" International Open Exhibition, which will run March 11 through 30 at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center, in Carmichael, Calif.
Her work was recently featured as January's Artist of the Month in the Mid-Valley Arts Council "Art News" and is on exhibit at the 250 South Main Gallery, in Independence.
Corvallis AAUW offers scholarship
The Corvallis Branch of the American Association of University Women offers a one-time scholarship of $400 to a woman student age 25 or older who resides in Benton County or in the area served by Corvallis School District 509J. The applicant should plan to enroll in at least eight credit hours each term or semester in an undergraduate degree or certification program in an Oregon college or university.
Selection will be based on a review of the applicant's academic achievements, career goals, work experiences, community activities, honors and awards. Applications are available at the financial aid offices of Oregon State University and Linn-Benton Community College. The application deadline is April 15. Military news
• LEMOORE, Calif. - Lt. Warren E. Sisson III, the son of Warren Sisson and Pamela Hunter of Corvallis, is an instructor pilot with the Flying Eagles Strike Fighter Squadron, training to conduct prompt and sustained combat operations at sea.
The squadron was established in October 1998, when F/A-18E/F Super Hornets were introduced into the fleet.
• GREAT LAKES, Ill. - Navy seaman recruit Hillary B. Davis, daughter of Nancy S. and Dan R. Davis of Corvallis, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
Davis is a 1999 graduate of Crescent Valley High School.
Masonic Past Masters Night
Daniel H. Strand, master of Corvallis Masonic Lodge 14, recently conducted Past Masters Night observances, including the award of a gold past master's watch to Arthur S. Fish, who served as master in 2000 and 2002.
