Benton 4-H livestock teams win state
The Benton County Senior Livestock Judging Team, under Coach Bruce Moos, won the championship at the state contest and qualified for the national contest in Louisville, Ky. Team members are John Baglien, David Baglien, Jordan Baumgartner, Cassandra Noble and Ashley Culver (alternate).
The team placed first in sheep and beef contests and second in swine and reasons contests. Overall individuals were John Baglien, first; Cassandra Noble, second; David Baglien, fourth; Jordan Baumgartner, fifth; and Ashley Culver, 10th.
The Intermediate Livestock Judging Team won their division championship. Team members all placed in the top 10 individually, including Peter Baglien, first; Mark Baglien second; Kiah Gourley, third; Tessa Gourley, sixth; and Melissa Hartwig 10th. Alternates were Katie Waldo and Andie Parrish, who placed ninth individually.
Fiber arts members are quilting finalists
Ten members of Loosely Bound, a fiber arts group, are finalists in the eighth biennial Pacific Northwest Quiltfest in Seattle. Marcia Gilson and Marcy Gregg of Philomath, and Elizabeth Hoffman, Shirley Strub and Kerry McFall of Corvallis each created one panel of a five-part scene depicting Marys Peak. Babette Grunwald of Philomath, Susan Johnson of Eugene, and Nancy Bryant, Diana Cleland-Boyle and Sidnee Snell of Corvallis created a five-part scene showing the Farmers Market with Benton County landmark structures in the background. The two pieces will compete against other quilts from five northwestern states and four western Canadian provinces.
Holcomb receives McCauley Scholarship
The McCauley Scholarship for 2008 was awarded to Joyce Holcomb of Albany, a teacher of ballet, tap and folk dancing. The scholarship, established to promote learning and leadership in the Corvallis international folkdancing community, is for Holcombe to attend the Stockton Folk Dance Camp.
College graduate
University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y. - Laura Teresa Morrison, a resident of Corvallis, recently graduated from the University of Rochester with a Bachelor of Arts in political science. Morrison is the daughter of Clint Morrison and Nancy Rosenberger and is a graduate of Corvallis High School.
Military news
Navy Seaman Nathan L. Vanhoff, son of Candice D. and Jay F. Vanhoff of Corvallis, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Vanhoff is a 2005 graduate of Nazarene Christian School of Philomath.
College honor roll
Pacific University, Forest Grove - Jessica Moser of Philomath was named to the Pacific University' Spring 2008 Dean's List.
Washington State University, Pullman, Wash. - Thomas Arthur Haig of Corvallis and Andrew Joseph Bottom and Gretchen Maijala Cottam of Philomath were named to the Washington State University President's Honor Roll for spring 2008.
Schroering named Young Scholar
Denison University, Granville, Ohio - Denison University senior Caitlin Schroering, daughter of Bobbie and Mark Schroering of Corvallis, has been selected as a Young Scholar to collaborate with faculty on research over the summer. Schroering is working with Professor John Cort of the religion department on a project titled "International Law, Spirituality and Indigenous People's Rights."
Corvallis Academy of Ballet honors
The Corvallis Academy of Ballet, under the direction of Jutta Hardison with advanced level teachers Megan Matthes and Matthew Averill, recently announced the following honors bestowed upon its advanced level students as well as three academy alumni:
Angela Ahn, Makayla Gessford and Dominique Jenssen all were accepted into the Boston Ballet summer intensive program; Natalie Cantrell attends the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet summer intensive program; Katie Capilla attends the Ballet Magnificant! summer intensive program in Mississippi; KateAshley Clarke attends the Boston Ballet summer intensive program; Eva Hellesto attends the Ballet Magnificant! summer intensive program in Mississippi on a partial merit scholarship; Carly DeMeo attends the Ballet Austin summer intensive program in Texas; Reed Souther attends the San Francisco Ballet summer intensive program on a partial merit scholarship; Katie van der Mars attends the American Ballet Theatre intensive program in Austin, Texas.
Kristin Jones, a CAB alumna who recently graduated from the Ballet Department at Butler University in Indiana, attends the Ballet Austin summer intensive program; Madeline Katz, a CAB alumna who just completed her freshman year in the Ballet Department at the University of Utah, has been offered an apprenticeship with Ballet Victoria in British Columbia; and Megan McDonald, a CAB alumna and graduate of Friends College in Kansas, has just completed her first year as a classical ballet dancer with the San Antonio Ballet in Texas.
