Jason Mock earns Eagle Scout rank
Jason Mock, a member of Boy Scout Troop 3 of Corvallis, recently completed the requirements for the Eagle award, Boy Scouts of America's highest scouting honor. To receive the rank, a scout must complete a series of merit badges, hold positions of authority within the troop and complete a service project.
Jason earned 31 merit badges, served as senior patrol leader, patrol leader and troop librarian, historian and scribe. His Eagle project was to build two fences and install sod irrigation and landscaping over a 1,700-square-foot area at the Northwest Hills Community Church.
The project involved 26 helpers and 182 hours of planning, preparation and construction. Jason is the son of Steve and Mary Mock of Corvallis. He received the award at his Eagle Court of Honor on March 14.
Jansik receives Fulbright Scholarship
Danielle Jansik, a graduate student in environmental engineering at Oregon State University, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and will study next year in Denmark.
Jansik, from Milwaukie, received a bachelor's degree in geology from OSU in 2006, and will conduct research on pollution movement through soils during her year abroad.
The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, is an international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. In has provided almost 300,000 participants - who are chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential - to study, teach and do research in the U.S. and more than 155 countries around the world.
Local students named to college honor roll
• Tyler Morse, the son of Michael and Tari Morse of Corvallis, was recently named to the Pacific Lutheran University dean's list for fall 2008. During January 2009, Tyler studied philosophy in England, Germany and Greece. A graduate of Corvallis High School, he is pursuing a degree in music at PLU.
The dean's list requires a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the term.
• The Fall 2008 president's and deans lists have been released for all of Portland State University's undergraduate academic units. To be named to the president's list, fulltime students must earn a 4.0 GPA for the fall 2008 quarter for at least 12 graded credit hours and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
Corvallis residents named to the president's List include: Bryan C. Andersen, School of Business Administration; Phillip Egan, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Benjamin A. Lindsey, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
To be named to the dean's list, fulltime students must earn a 3.75 GPA (out of 4.0) or better for the fall 2008 quarter for at least 12 graded credit hours and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
Corvallis residents named to the dean's list include: Mark D. Bozarth-Dreher, College of Urban and Public Affairs; Cedar A. Dunn, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; Connor P. Murphy, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Adriane M. Wai, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
He wins Pokémon Championship
Lily He, an 8-year-old from Corvallis came in first place at the Pokémon Trading Card Game Washington State (TCG) Championship in Federal Way, Wash., on March 14. Because of her first-place ranking, Lily has earned an invitation to compete in the national tournament. Pokémon TCG tournaments provide an opportunity for young people to succeed at an intellectual sport and for each player to test his or her Pokémon TCG skills, strategy and creativity.
Boys & Girls Club names outstanding volunteers
Steve Zander, Ryan Higgins and Brad Thompson were recently recognized as outstanding Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis volunteers by the club's board. Ryan Higgins and Brad Thompson volunteer directly with young people, donating a total of more than 80 hours a month to the club.
Oregon State graduate students receive honors
Two graduate students in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Oregon State University have been honored for their academic accomplishments.
Andrea Courtney Hall of Burlington, Vt., received the OSU Bayley Graduate Fellowship, a $4,000 award given each year to a graduate student who has demonstrated academic excellence, professional development and leadership.
Justin Hall of Ashland., received the OSU P.F. and Nellie Buck Yerex Graduate Fellowship, a $10,000 award given annually to one student who has demonstrated academic excellence, professional development and leadership.
