Lee accepted in Mortar Board Honor Society

Rachel Lee of Corvallis was recently accepted as a member into the Quo Vadis Chapter of Mortar Board at the University of North Dakota for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Mortar Board is a national college senior honor society founded upon the ideals of scholarship, leadership, and service. At Awards Night, the UND Athletic Department honored Rachel for her academic and athletic achievements, and Coach Maviael Sampaio also awarded her the "Hardest Worker" Swimming Award and All-Time Top 10 Times in three swimming events at UND. She is a Business Management and Pre-Physical Therapy Major.

Rachel Lee is a 2007 graduate of Crescent Valley High School and the daughter of Dr. Marianne Clausing-Lee and Dr. Kevin Lee.

Hruby named Belmont University Scholar

Kenzie Hruby, a graduating senior at Crescent Valley High School, has been selected as a recipient of a Belmont University Faculty Scholarship of $12,000 annually. Recipients are selected based upon academic excellence, strong leadership skills and outstanding character. Kenzie will attend Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., and major in music business and vocal performance.

Merten inducted into Engineering Hall of Fame

Gregory Merten of Corvallis was one of 42 Oregon State University College of Engineering distinguished alumni recently honored at the annual Oregon Stater Awards.

Engineering alumni were inducted in three groups based on the length of their careers and contributions to society n the Engineering Hall of Fame, the Academy of Distinguished Engineers and the Council of Outstanding Early Career Engineers.

Merten was inducted into the Engineering Hall of Fame.

Recipients of these awards are affiliated with both large and small companies, as well as major government agencies, the U.S. Armed Forces and international universities.

Clarke receives Dunaway Award

The Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences hosted its annual Awards Banquet recently. Among those honored was Jennifer Clarke of Stillwater.

Clarke received a Dunaway Award for $1,000. The award recognizes her good character and high academic achievement. She also received a George Harold and Dorothy Elsie Faisy Award in the amount of $300 for her professional potential and academic accomplishments. Clarke is the daughter of Drs. Jean and Cyril Clarke of Corvallis.

Schroering named to USA Today team

A Denison University senior, Caitlin Schroering, from Corvalis, was named to the USA Today's 2009 All-USA College Academic Third Team.

USA TODAY honors 20 Third Team members for outstanding intellectual achievement and leadership. Judges considered grades, leadership, activities and, most importantly, how students extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. Although there is no cash award associated with the Third Team, members and schools were published in USA TODAY, as well as on the usatoday.com Web site, on April 29.

Schroering, is an environmental studies major and political science minor. After graduation, she plans to work as a community organizer for social justice and environmental issues before attending law school.

Babbel receives university scholarship

Danielle Babbel recently received the Ray L. and Eloise Hoopes Lillywhite University Scholarship from the College of Natural Resources at Utah State University. A geography and anthropology dual major, Babbel is the daughter of Robert and Michelle Babbel of Corvallis.

Mix named to Purdue University Dean's List

Lizette Anne May Caspe Mix of north Albany was recently recognized at the 2009 University Honors Convocation held April 19 at Purdue University. Mix, a junior at Purdue, is on the dean's list for multiple terms. She is a full-ride scholar through the Navy-ROTC and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is the daughter of Loren and Alma C. Mix and a 2006 graduate of Philomath High School.

Labahn completes project, earns Eagle

Cody Labahn, a member of Boy Scout Troop 161 of Philomath, recently completed the requirements for the Eagle award, Boy Scouts of America's highest scouting honor. To receive the rank, a scout must complete a series of merit badges, hold positions of authority within the troop and complete a service project.

Labahn earned 40 merit badges as well as a God and Church badge. For his Eagle project he built a walking bridge on a trail surrounding the Philomath Scout Lodge property.

The project involved 12 helpers and 100 hours of planning, preparation and construction. Labahn is the son of Dennis and Misty Labahn of Philomath. He received the award at his Eagle Court of Honor on April 1.
