LEBANON - No, the cake won't be shaped like a yellow happy face.
But Rachel Evans, 22, and Michael Lefevers, 25, expect smiles as bright as the retail giant's trademark when they tie the knot this Saturday at the Lebanon Wal-Mart Supercenter.
Evans worked at Wal-Mart for 31/2 years. She met her fiance through a coworker, Lefevers' sister, in the parking lot of the store. And even though she recently started a new job, she still shops daily at her former place of employment.
So naturally, when she heard Wal-Mart was having a contest offering its stores as wedding sites on July 7 to seven lucky couples nationwide, she applied.
Last month, she learned she was a winner - the only one, in fact, west of the Rockies.
"They're paying for everything except dresses and tuxedos," said the Lebanon woman, who made her daily trek to the Supercenter last Wednesday with her fiance and their baby daughter, Tallyn, to check in with her coordinator, store co-manager Jody Elliott. "I'm excited, 'cause I know everyone who works here."
"Everyone" includes the maid of honor, who manages the sporting goods department; one of the groomsmen, who works in the tire and lube section; and even the officiant, Pastor Garland Rogers, a cashier at checkstand 6.
Garland, who retired in 2003 from the Lebanon First Assembly of God, said he's delighted to be marrying a couple in a retail establishment.
"I think it's super," he said, beaming. "I think if Christ were here on Earth, he'd be in the marketplace. This is the marketplace."
According to company officials, the promotion came about when Wal-Mart Stores discovered many of its betrothed customers were having trouble finding ceremony sites for July 7. The date - 7/7/07 - is considered by many to be the triple jackpot of lucky wedding days.
The Association for Wedding Professionals is predicting twice the number of brides as usual. TheKnot.com, a wedding information Web site, says about 38,000 couples have listed July 7 as their wedding date, more than three times their average for a typical Saturday in July.
Wal-Mart created the "Lucky in Love Wedding Search" to provide its lawn and garden areas as a venue for seven couples.
Evans' application won over the selection committee, company officials said.
"When we got engaged, we told everyone that we wanted to get married at Wal-Mart," she wrote. "We never thought we could. This is like our dream might come true."
The wedding package includes flowers, wedding rings, cake and reception food, digital cameras and a $1,000 Wal-Mart gift card.
Both the interior and exterior home and garden sections of the store will be closed to the public most of Saturday, said Elliott, who volunteered to be the Evans-Lefevers wedding coordinator because of his friendship with Evans.
The big sale pricetags will be off the plants in the greenhouse, he added, and anyone who wants to buy a garden hose is just going to have to wait. But the rest of the store will be business as usual.
"It's going to be up to the company if they continue the program, but so far, it's been a blast," Elliott said.
