Dean Hamer, senior investigator and head of the Gene Structure and Regulation Section of the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute, will discuss the current state of research into the biological origins of sexuality during a lecture at Oregon State University from 1:30 to 3 p.m. today in Bexel Hall room 103.

Hamer is an internationally recognized geneticist. He wrote two ground-breaking books, “The Science of Desire: The Search for the Gay Gene and the Biology of Behavior,” postulated the idea of a “gay gene” back in the 1990s and 2004’s “The God Gene: How Faith Is Hardwired into Our Genes.”

Hamer’s husband, documentary filmmaker Joe Wilson, also will be lecturing today, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., at Linn-Benton Community College in the Diversity Achievement Center Room F220, following the screening of his documentary, “Out in the Silence.”

Wilson and Hamer will be screening the 2010 award-winning documentary “Out in the Silence” at 5 p.m. tonight in the Memorial Union Journey Room on the OSU campus. The documentary explores topics ranging from religion, safe schools, anti-gay bullying and economic development, to discrimination, tolerance and understanding.

Both the guest lectures and screenings are organized by the recently formed OSU Chapter of the National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals. According to Steven Leider, advisor to the OSU chapter of the new group — and the director of the Office of LGBT Outreach & Services — the event is the inaugural speaker event for this new student program aimed at recruiting LGBT students into science and engineering programs at the university.

More information about “Out in the Silence” and the ongoing community engagement campaign, as well as a short trailer for the film, are available on the website:
