Bright polka dotted aprons, pillbox hats and wildly colorful purses spilled out of Michelle Roden's booth like butterflies bursting out of cocoons. Dressed in turquoise that set off her fiery hair and complemented the wares on display at The Pink Purse, Roden smiled from her perch as customers admired the frilly handmade goods.

"They are totally foo-foo," she said.

Saturday was the second time that Roden, who lives in Corvallis, had set up a booth at the Corvallis Artisans' Market, which is in its first year at the parking lot on First Street and Monroe Avenue. Its open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. - the same hours as the adjacent Farmer's Market.

Shari Dover, market director, said 50 vendors have signed up to participate, although not every vendor shows up every Saturday. She said live music and kids' activities add variety to the market, and that response from vendors and shoppers has been strong.

"It's been really good," she said; good enough that the market is likely to return next April. (Both the Artisans Market and the Corvallis Farmers Market close in November for the winter.)

Roden said business is good at The Pink Purse, and that ecourages her to pursue her passion: An office assistant by day, she wants to single-handedly bring hats back into fashion. She spends long hours crafting purses, lampshades and aprons to sell.

"I wanted to run away to Paris and be a dress designer," she said - but Saturday, she was having fun in a parking lot.

"It's a great idea to tap into this community," she said of the artisans' market. "Farmer's Market is such a huge draw. I thought I'd give it a whirl."

The cost to vendors is a one-time $10 jury fee, an annual membership of $40, and a weekly booth fee of $10 plus 10 percent profit. Anyone interested in participating can apply online at corvallisartisansmarket.com. For information, call call 752-ARTS or send e-mail to dovers@corvallisartisansmarket.com.
