Six students from Oregon State University have received 2008-09 U.S. Student Fulbright awards, a record number for OSU.
The students will use their awards to study and conduct research abroad. These merit-based fellowships are awarded annually to recent bachelor's graduates, master's and doctoral students.
The Fulbright program is sponsored by the United States government to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." About 1,200 are selected annually from a nationwide applicant pool.
OSU's 2008-09 Fulbright recipients:
Sarah E. Gallup of Dallas, an M.A. student in English (rhetoric and writing), received an English teaching assistantship to France; Christina Murphy of Eugene, a senior in fisheries and wildlife, and an international degree and University Honors College student. She plans to conduct research in Chile; Alison Newman of Eugene, a graduate student in international public health, plans to research rural maternal health in Sri Lanka; Seth White of Eugene, a doctoral student in fisheries science, has plans to study fish in the Czech Republic.
Robbie Lamb of Portland, a senior in marine biology and an international degree and University Honors College student, is interested in becoming a marine management organization in Ecuador.
Matt Hawkyard of Roseville, Calif., an M.S. student in fisheries science, plans to conduct shrimp and larval fish research in Norway.
