Registration is now open for fall term classes in Oregon State University's Saturday Academy, an opportunity for students in grades 5-12 to participate in short educational adventures in science, math and technology.

This non-profit initiative is hosted by the College of Engineering and the College of Science. Most classes are for a single Saturday morning during October or November, but some meet several times. Classes have small fees but tuition assistance is available.

Complete information about registration, course descriptions, fees, class dates and locations can be found online at http://academy.engr.oregonstate.edu, or by calling 737-8139.

The Web site also provides information about Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering for 2007, which last year paired 141 high school students with mentors throughout Oregon and southern Washington.

Classes for middle school students this term include creative engineering design, understanding the effects of alcohol and drug abuse, paper art, careers in medicine, creative math problem solving, fish printing and dissection, the science of music and the Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics (AWSEM) Club for Girls.

Classes for high school students include writing college and scholarship essays, drawing comic book characters, math systems across cultures, an inside look at veterinary school, personal money management and the AWSEM High School Club for Girls.
