The Corvallis Fire Department will hold its fourth annual Greek Fire Academy from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. The training session will take place at Oregon State University near the Agriculture/Life Science Building, 2750 Southwest Campus Way.
The purpose of the academy is to educate fraternity and sorority leaders on fire safety practices to protect themselves, their houses and their residents.
The academy includes a lecture on fire prevention and how to talk to residents about fire safety. The talk will be followed by interactive activities, including fire extinguisher practice, crawling through a "smoke house," and a drill in which participants will wear firefighter clothes and use fire hoses.
The final event is a live fire demonstration. Two side-by-side "dorm rooms" constructed in a reusable trailer will be ignited. One room will be equipped with a sprinkler system; the other will not. The demonstration shows the advantage of sprinklers and the magnitude of an uncontrolled fire in a college-type room.
A training for resident assistants at OSU was held earlier in the month.
