Workshops help prepare for winter

A pair of free workshops at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library will offer participants tips on how to get ahead of rising energy costs by making their homes ready for winter.

The 90-minute workshops are scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight, with a repeat session scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.

The workshops are the final two in a series sponsored by the Corvallis Energy Challenge and Energy Trust of Oregon. Participants will learn everything from low-cost, quick-action tips to what's involved in a comprehensive home-performance assessment using state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment.

The library is at 645 N.W. Monroe Ave.

Local human rights worker Joshua Hough will speak about his two years of volunteer experience in the West Bank and share photos taken during his work.

Hough is a volunteer with Christian Peacemaker Teams and has been living in the South Hebron Hills, accompanying Palestinian children to and from school and escorting shepherds and farmers.

His talk will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the Martha Room of the First United Methodist Church, on 11th Street and Monroe Avenue.

The event is sponsored by Corvallis-Albany Friends of Middle East Peace. For more information, call 766-8229.
