2:34 p.m: State officials increased the number of people killed on Oregon highways over the Labor Day holiday weekend to ten in eight crashes.
Oregon State Police had earlier reported that nine people were killed, but revised the number after word came of a fatal crash in Grant County on Sunday.
On average, 7 people have died over Labor Day each year since 1970. Last year, six people were killed in traffic crashes.
Holiday crash data was collected from 6 p.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Monday.
According to known police reports from Oregon law enforcement agencies, each fatal crash involved a single vehicle, including two crashes in which two people were killed. Two others died in traffic crashes on Friday prior to the start of the official reporting period.
The State Police also arrested 87 drivers for driving under the influence of intoxicants this holiday weekend compared to previous years.
Over the 2007 and 2006 Labor Day weekends, OSP troopers arrested 78 intoxicated drivers each year.
OSP's Bend Area Command made ten arrests, the highest number of trooper DUII arrests made this weekend, followed by the Salem Area Command office with seven.
In addition to increased DUII enforcement efforts, OSP troopers issued 1,500 speed-related citations, nearly 100 seat belt violation citations and helped more than 440 disabled motorists including 323 along interstate freeways.
