The Adair Village chief of police is looking for help keeping the peace.

Chief Justin Jones, who was sworn in last month, is recruiting volunteers. He hopes to train six reserves and four cadets to fill out the newly-formed department. The force currently consists of Jones and a part-time code enforcement officer, Joel Imamura, who Jones said plans to apply for a reserve position.

"A reserve basically has the same police powers as a full-time officer and will attend similar training," Jones said.

Reserve officers will attend the Mid Valley Reserve Training Academy. Classes are held two nights and one Saturday a week from November through May. Reserves will get more than 300 hours of training and can receive college credit.

Once reserves graduate from the academy, they have to complete six months of in-house training. Jones would like to recruit a few reserves who have already competed the academy.

Reserve officers work for the department 24 hours a month and are not compensated.

However, Adair Village volunteers will have some benefits.

"Our reserve program is going to be somewhat unique to Oregon," Jones said.

Reserves will be able to get professional training, paid for by the department, that is usually reserved for full-time officers.

Cadet positions are open to people ages 16 to 20 who are considering a career in criminal justice. Cadets will be involved in community outreach and assist with tasks like traffic control.

Jones said other department business is progressing. Two patrol cars are scheduled to arrive next month. Four police bicycles are on order, with plans for heavy use.

"A lot of agencies do ride-alongs in patrol cars," Jones said. "Well, we're going to have bicycle ride-alongs."

Dispatch and radio service is currently being set up. This summer, a barrack will be moved from Santiam Christian Schools to city hall. Jones hopes to have the station moved in by next summer.

Hiring paid officers is still about five years out, Jones said.
