CORVALLIS - A the condition of a bicyclist who was run over by an SUV on Tuesday was upgraded to fair condition at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Saturday.

According to police reports, Carolyn Latierra, 62, was riding her bicycle in the southbound bike lane of Fourth Street at the Marys River bridge when she was struck from behind by a Ford Expedition driven by Angela Beggs.

Latierra was dragged about 50 feet before the vehicle came to a stop with its rear passenger's side tire on Latierra's abdomen and spent time in the Intensive Care Unit.

Latierra's daughter-in-law, Rebecca Mann, said Latierra suffered a fractured vertebra, broken ribs, a punctured lung and injury to her liver, spleen and head. Mann said Latierra has been conscious and in good humor since her rescue but does not remember the accident.

Beggs, 41, was arrested by the Corvallis Police Department on charges of reckless endangerment, reckless driving, third-degree assault and driving uninsured. However, the Benton County district attorney's office has not filed charges against Beggs, citing the ongoing investigation.

Beggs told police she turned around when her 1-year-old child, who was in the back seat, began to cry. The police report indicated that the SUV crossed into the bike lane at that time, striking Latierra.
